Unusual Construction Technique

Have you ever seen a foundation that looked like this? Just when you thought you had seen it all. Who would have thought that old wine barrels could hold up a building? This two unit building on Nob Hill in San Francisco was built well before the 1906 earthquake and recently sold for $2,100,000, so I guess the wine barrels are doing just fine.
